Recap: On a journey of preparing to possess the promise, fundamentally looking to answer this question, “Are there things we can do now to prepare for the future?” (We have a future and a hope!)

Intro: Near the end of book of Joshua he recaps for Israel their own story, reminding them of who they, where they came from, and what God has done for them.

Joshua 24:2
“And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, dwelt on the other side of the River in old times; and they served other gods.”

Genesis 17:8
“Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

That’s where we start, with a promise, a generational promise that didn’t start or end with them or us.                     (everlasting possession).

He reminded the Israelites that they had a tough road to get where they were, but on more than one occasion God brought them through the impossible and the impassable.

Josua 24:4-7
To Esau I gave the mountains of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.  “…Afterward I brought you out…So they cried out to the Lord; and He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, brought the sea upon them, and covered them. And your eyes saw what I did in Egypt.”

There was a deliverance, a type of our baptism. The waters have crashed over on the enemy that was pursuing us. We will fight battles ahead but it is now a fight of acquisition, not one of looking over our shoulders being chased by the past.

They came out to a wilderness of transition.

Joshua 24:7
“Then you dwelt in the wilderness a long time.”

James 1:4
“But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”

Hebrews 6:12
“…that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

We have learned some things in the transition: Declutter, Determine, Derive, Discover, Disembark, Declare, Discern, Distinguish, Descry, Debut, Debacle, and Deliver!

One of the great lessons is that what happens happens by faith. Remember the Debut, the walls of Jericho fell, by faith! (Hebrews 11:30)

Faith is what got them out of the wilderness, faithlessness is what caused them to stay in the wilderness. Faith is how they won their debut battle and faith was to carry them through. We fight the good fight OF faith!

Joshua 24:11
Then you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho. And the men of Jericho fought against you—also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I delivered them into your hand.

God blessed them and gave them the promised land.

Joshua 24:13
“I have given you a land for which you did not labor, and cities which you did not build, and you dwell in them; you eat of the vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.”

Sounds a lot like grace! We too inherit what we did not build, by grace!

But, not every one entered in.

Hebrews 3:16-19
For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? 17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

They didn’t get in because they didn’t believe. But, there were two who made it out of Egypt and into the Promised land; Joshua, and a man named Caleb.

Only Joshua and Caleb came back to Moses with a faith-filled report.

Joshua and Caleb had to wait years and years to get into the promised land, they were the only two who believed. Finally after many battles:

Joshua 14:6-12
Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him: “You know the word which the Lord said to Moses the man of God concerning you and me in Kadesh Barnea. 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back word to him as it was in my heart. 8 Nevertheless my brethren who went up with me made the heart of the people melt, but I wholly followed the Lord my God. 9 So Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land where your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children’s forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel [b]wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. 11 As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in. 12 Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”

So Joshua blesses him and says yes, it is yours and Caleb gets Hebron as his inheritance. They cross over, they fight for the land, they conquer it, and then the land was divided up into allotted inheritances.

A few things we can learn from Caleb and the division of the land into inheritances that will help us to see our promised land and walk into it.

Destiny – Possessing the Promise of Full Inheritance

1. It is determined by God

Joshua 14:5
As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did; and they divided the land.

God has decreed a thing for you, your inheritance is set.

Salvation – sozo

Hebrews 1:14
Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?

Salvation includes: healing, wholeness, prosperity, deliverance, health, peace and the forgiveness of sins.

Purpose and Calling: Something unique for each of us.

Ephesians 2:10
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Relationship and a Place in his family:

1 Corinthians 12:18
But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.

Holy Spirit has been given to us to help us explore, discover and unpack our promised land that is Jesus.

1 Corinthians 2:12
What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.

2. You Are Qualified!

Disqualifying facts about Caleb:

Joshua 14:6
“Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him …”

Joshua was a Kenezite. The Kenezites were actually part of the people group who Israel was supposed to kick out of the land.  (See Genesis 15:18-19)

There is away to translate his name in such a way that it means “dog.” In Hebrew culture dogs were vomit eating, unworthy, dirty animals who ate unclean things. Disqualified on every level!

Colossians 1:12
“…giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

3. You have to fight the fight of FAITH!

Joshua 14:11
As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in.

He’s just as strong now as he was then. Strength was not and still is not the issue. He hasn’t gotten stronger, he is as he was before.  Its about faith!

You do have to know your strengths, you need to understand who you are, but can you say, “when I am weak then I am strong?” Have you seen that it is not by horses or chariots, it’s not by strength or might or power, but in your weakness that he is made strong?

2 Corinthians 12:9
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

The power of God rests, does not strive. It finds a restful expression through those who are comfortable with their weakness and know that their strength is not the issue.

So Caleb full of faith says:

Joshua 14:1
“It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”

The Lord is with me and I will drive them out AS HE SAID. We fight the good fight, by his word, a proceeding word that brings faith and has the authority of faith so that  by a word, we can cast out those evil things that try to intimate us from claiming what is ours. “Give me my mountain.”

4. You have to define and own your mountain.

Joshua 14:12
“Give me my mountain.”

In Scriptures mountains, hills, high places speak of places of worship and places of authority. You must personalize it, and you must see it.

Another guy who took a hill: Jesus at Golgotha!

If you’re looking to see what is your mountain, who do you love? Let’s see our inheritance, our joy and our crown as others, them being blessed, advanced, and the walking out God’s best for them.

Philippians 4:1
Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.

1 Thessalonians 2:19
For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming?

Summary

What are you doing now to prepare for that is next?

Great advice for preparation:

Hebrews 3:15
Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Let’s hear and see what he is showing us, and let all of our so called “maturity” and development recapitulate into “I only do what I see and hear the Father doing.” If we can do that, which we can, we will successfully prepare to possess the promise!
